Biography:
Ashot Adami Hovhannisyan (Deghdz Ashot), born on January 6, 1929, in Mayisyan village, was an Armenian painter and the Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia (1990). His artistic journey encompassed significant periods of study and creative evolution:
– From 1943 to 1947, he studied at Gyumri Merkurov Art School.
– Between 1948 and 1950, he attended the Fine Arts Academy of Yerevan.
– In 1951, he served in the Soviet Army.
– His artistic exploration took him to Leningrad (now Saint-Petersburg) in 1955.
– He enrolled in the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1957, graduating in 1964.
– Returning to Armenia, he embarked on an active creative career, initially focusing on realistic themes such as “Still Life with a Teapot” and “Tonratun.”
– Throughout his career, he explored various styles, including geometric abstraction and realism, creating notable works like “Cart with Oxen” and “Portrait of Father.”
– His works were exhibited internationally, including in Paris, Lisbon, Budapest, and Berlin.
– Ashot Hovhannisyan passed away on July 12, 1997, in Yerevan.
Legacy:
Ashot Hovhannisyan’s art reflects influences from European modernism, particularly expressionism, and abstract art. His use of vibrant colors and emotive compositions also bears the influence of Armenian miniature painting and artists such as Martiros Saryan and Minas Avetisyan.
